The killing of Floyd in May has sparked weeks of protests and led to calls to rename places named for Confederate officers and remove statues of historical figures who held slaves or colonized or exploited Native Americans.īrune said the Sierra Club once excluded people of color as it catered to middle- and upper-class whites. Revisiting Muir’s offensive remarks comes as environmental groups and the outdoor industry aim to be more inclusive. The discernible profile of Muir – with long beard, brimmed hat and walking stick gazing at Yosemite’s Half Dome – was stamped on the 2005 California quarter when the US Mint was producing a commemorative coin for every state. Muir is so widely revered that his name appears across California on everything from schools to national monuments, one of the state’s highest peaks, a giant swath of scenic Sierra Nevada wilderness that is bisected by a trail in his name and a national historic site. Then-California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger displays the final choice for the California commemorative quarter, featuring an image of naturalist John Muir. The way we created the wilderness areas we now rightly prize was racist.” “I would leave Muir’s name on things but explain that, as hard as it may be to accept, it is not just Muir who was racist. “There is a dark underside here that will not be erased by just saying Muir was a racist,” White said. American Indians needed to be removed in order to reinvent those places as untouched. Even though they had been there for thousands of years, Muir wrote that they “seemed to have no right place in the landscape”. Muir’s image of pristine wilderness unshaped by humans only existed if native people weren’t part of it. Until recent years, Muir’s legacy has been largely untarnished and focused on his conservation efforts, such as saving Yosemite Valley before it became a national park and preserving the world’s largest trees in what became Sequoia National Park.īut Richard White, a Stanford history professor, said Muir’s advocacy for wilderness has an inherent racial bias. Visitors walk through the Muir Woods National Monument, named after John Muir, in Marin county, California. He also kept company with other early club members and leaders, such as Joseph LeConte and David Starr Jordan, who advocated for white supremacy and promoting the race through eugenics, which called for forced sterilization of Black people and other minority groups, Brune said. He emphasized the need to preserve the land but also disdained American Indians as dirty savages and Black people as lazy “Sambos,” a particularly offensive slur. Muir, who was born in Scotland, came to the US as a young man and traveled and wrote extensively, romanticizing nature in breathless passages. They continue to hurt and alienate Indigenous people and people of color.” “As the most iconic figure in Sierra Club history, Muir’s words and actions carry an especially heavy weight. “He made derogatory comments about Black people and Indigenous peoples that drew on deeply harmful racist stereotypes, though his views evolved later in his life,” Brune wrote on the group’s website. Muir – who founded the club in 1892, helped spawn the environmental movement and is called “father of our national parks” – figures prominently in what Brune called a “truth-telling” about the group’s early history.

“We got guys that wanted to put everything into this one.” “That locker room fought like crazy,” Stefanski said. Nick Chubb ran for 77 yards and caught a touchdown pass to join Jim Brown as the only players in Browns history to exceed 1,500 yards rushing in a season. Watson connected on 19 of 29 passes for 230 yards with two touchdowns and the two interceptions. Defensive coordinator Joe Woods' job could be in jeopardy as the unit was inconsistent overall and awful against the run, even with Myles Garrett - whose 16 sacks tied his own club record - having another spectacular season. While Browns coach Kevin Stefanski is expected to return, he might have to shake up his staff. “We've got to reflect on the season, watch the tape. “It's tough to win seven games and finish the season like that,” said Watson, who went 3-3 as a starter after serving an 11-game suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy. Instead, the Browns (7-10) couldn't protect Watson and wound up at the bottom of the AFC North while losing at least 10 games for the 17th time since the franchise re-entered the league in 1999. “When you leave it to other teams, anything can happen," said cornerback Levi Wallace, who picked off Watson late in the first half to set up a field goal by Chris Boswell that gave the Steelers a lead they would not relinquish.Ĭleveland was hoping to sweep the Steelers for the first time since 1988 and finish ahead of them in the standings for the first time since 1989. The help Pittsburgh needed to sneak into the postseason, however, didn't materialize. His teams have been mathematically alive for the playoffs in 257 of them, including a rousing finale against the Browns in which they sacked Deshaun Watson seven times and picked him off twice. Tomlin has coached 258 regular season games with the Steelers. Pittsburgh put together a solid second half as Pickett learned on the job, going 7-2 after its bye week to assure coach Mike Tomlin of a record 16th straight non-losing season. Not after a 2-6 start that included Watt tearing his left pectoral in Week 1 and missing seven games and rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett enduring a rocky indoctrination into the NFL. “I think it will take a little bit of time to kind of understand and come to terms with it because I feel like we were starting to play some really (darn) good football,” Pittsburgh outside linebacker T.J. Instead, they'll spend Monday cleaning out their lockers and pointing toward 2023. The Steelers wanted a chance at carrying the momentum they've built over the last two months into next week's wild-card round. Just as the clock hit zero to finish off a 28-14 victory over Cleveland on Sunday, Pittsburgh's slim but for weeks seemingly zombielike playoff chances vanished when the Miami Dolphins kicked a late field goal and tacked on a safety to beat the New York Jets and earn the AFC's seventh and final postseason spot. And for that need there would be someone, somewhere, who would provide satisfaction. With the cravings there would come a need. In the morning, with this job behind her and with this plaything cast aside, the cravings would begin anew. His being was so fleeting, as would be her own ecstasy. You gonna tell me everything about everything, and I’ll sort it out.” She pricked the tip of his nose and drew the blade slowly across her tongue, savoring the taste. Now she smiled, lowering the knife to begin a hard night’s work. “Know what?!” he shouted, nearly pleading now. “You know,” she said, holding the knife delicately by its shank, drawing slow figure eights in the air above his face. Then he saw a knife come up from the side of the bed in her bloody hand. A beastly look upon the human form, the American thought. Keiko’s face expressed something-not a smile, nor a scowl. “You’re a crazy fucking psycho! What the fuck do I know?!” “You not the only one paying Keiko tonight, Joe.” Her mouth tingled with the salty, coppery taste of his essence. He didn’t know that all American men were Joes in his tormentor’s mind. “ Joe ?” the American asked through the pain. Its taste, its simply being on her, made staying focused on the business end of things very difficult. Her tongue appeared again and licked spots of blood from above her lip. Blood sprayed from his wound, flecks dotting Keiko’s face and the peignoir she had briefly fretted over. He pulled and bucked and twisted and fought. It hit the off-white wall, leaving a bright red starburst on the slick surface before falling to the floor. With a force less impressive than might seem necessary, Keiko dug deep into the nipple and jerked her hand away, tearing it from his body, flinging the bit of soft, pink flesh aside. Hard, very hard, so much so that the American was drawn from his burgeoning erotic state to recoil from this real pain. On the end of each finger was a perfectly filed natural nail, and with these Keiko now pinched. “Unnhhh,” he groaned, his face contorted in the beginnings of an ecstatic agony. She found his nipple and squeezed it between thumb and forefinger. “You gotta do something for Keiko first,” she said, and slid a hand through the black curls on his chest. “Come on…” the American demanded now, with gritted teeth. There would be time enough for pleasure, but, as was necessary, business had to come at some point before her plaything was dead. Ooh, sweet one, she thought, the warmth rising within, lifting her almost to the precipice before she called retreat. She imagined each tiny drop as a pearl of redness-blood tears that he was crying…crying for her. His face was dotted with glistening beads of sweat. Keiko rolled her head once and then looked square at the American. “Come on, mama-san, I’m needin’ this bad and I’m needin’ it soon…” After a very few repetitions she felt herself getting wet. So perfect did he speak it, so clear and pure was his desire for it, that Keiko replayed the intonation over and over in her mind. Primal forces boiled within her as he spoke that word. As she sat upon the mattress her tongue slid into view and slowly wet her lips. “You want Keiko to spank you?” She skated one foot across the wood floor, then the other, until she stood bedside, black hair draped over either shoulder and dark eyes sweeping his body. “Do me, mama-san,” the American beckoned with eyes hungry and limbs tugging joyously at the bindings he had insisted upon in pursuit of some masochistic fantasy. Keiko Kimura stood near the foot of the bed, a sheer white peignoir hanging from wispy straps to veil her still enticing form, thinking both that the American’s fledgling erection was unimpressive and that his blood was going to be the devil to get out of fine silk.īut she could not deny the rapture of that warm, red wetness rolling over her, nor the heights to which a scream could take her, and looking upon the pale body that was willingly four-pointed to the bedposts, she knew that ruined lingerie was an acceptable trade. Both have to emit symbol tables, constant tables, etc. This not only includes abstracting the format of machine instructions, and the layout of code and data and the tracking of labels, but also completely mundane things that even assembly programmers take for granted (thanks to high-level assemblers). What do these two systems have to abstract, relative to the machine code?īinary encoding: Both C and Lisp must abstract the encoding of a program into binary form. In the abstract, we can consider a C implementation that exposes just the essence of the language, and we can imagine a Lisp implementation that does the same*. > I can tell however that I’ve never heardįirst, let me point out that there is a distinction to be made between abstract and concrete systems, one that I failed to make originally. With Scheme, the situation is even more obvious: In the Scheme standard, the language is called an ‘algorithmic’ language, not a ‘functional’ language. The very same people were unable to explain how Lisp was more a functional PL than e.g. In any classes I got in CS, it was taught as a functional > Saying that Lisp is more similar to Java than to ML is specious, for Or like saying Smalltalk is a functional language, just an impure one. Saying that Lisp is a functional programming language, just an impure one, is like saying that you’re still a vegetarian if you eat steaks, just an impure one. Java is indeed lacking some features, but those have nothing to do with functional programming. Maybe I should have used Smalltalk as an example instead of Java and said: Lisp is no more a functional programming language than Smalltalk – because I really cannot find any essential differences between those two languages. The distinction between FP and ‘pure’ FP is useless, since ‘non-pure’ languages lose all advantages of functional programming. > requirement for a functional programming language. > programming languages as you said earlier, but it certainly not a > forbidding non mutable state is a feature of pure functional Misunderstanding: I was talking about first-class functions, anonymous functions, and lexical closures. > calculus, or that it tries to avoid non mutable state… > It is the first time I am hearing that smalltalk is derived from lambda They work analogous in functional and imperative languages and have a lot more to do with Lisp’s strong support for list processing than with functional programming. Map/filter/reduce are specialized functions for *list* processing, but also an application of higher-order-functions/procedures. Lexical closures exist in many other languages too, especially Smalltalk, but to a lesser extent even Java. If you want to bring historic arguments about what Lisp originally was: The first Lisp version, IIRC, did not have lexical closures but did dynamic name binding instead. The term functional means “like a mathematical function”. The same applies to Java, Smalltalk, … I have used Java as an example here and not to claim it is the one and only true language. You can still do pure FP in it, but you aren’t forced to, and thus lose the advantages (you cannot assume anymore that some anynomous function passed to your code is purely functional). They violate one of the most fundamental principles of FP by this. Scheme simply *doesn’t* avoid mutable state, nor does Common Lisp. > suddenly become imperative languages as a result! > the mainstream of the FP community, adding the distinction that > until much later that the class of “pure” functional languages entered > functional programming community, and are the archetypal > Scheme fits all of these criteria, as does ML, which was its European > 4) The avoidance of mutable state as a general rule. > 3) The use of map/filter/reduce as a general rule. > 1) Semantics based directly on the lambda calculus. If you disagree with this, you simply have a different understanding of functional programming than most of the world and we just have to agreee to disagree. Thus, the features you mentioned do not make a language a functional language. In fact, many call it the godfather of OOP languages. The features you mentioned can be found in Smalltalk, which few people would call a functional language. I admit I should have been a bit more precise in my reply. > functional programming is, it makes me wonder if I should reply or just But if you compare Java to Lisp and defend it saying I don’t know what Let's freakin' do this! If it’s specifically the directories that power the “TV Shows” library, then it is comprised of 2019 directories, all organized as “seriesname/season/episode.ext.” Would that be the entire contents of Google Drive, or the specific directories that are favorited in Infuse? If Infuse has to look at every directory in Google Drive, regardless of its favorited status (what Infuse is told to look at), then that number will be huge.
